Santorini Beyond the Caldera: Quiet Villages and Black Sand Beaches
Perissa and Perivolos: The Black Sand Coast
The volcanic black sand beaches on Santorini's southeast coast are a world away from the caldera crowds. Perissa stretches for kilometers, backed by tavernas where you can rent a sunbed for €5 and spend the day swimming in crystalline Aegean water. The sand gets scorching hot by midday — bring water shoes.
Perivolos, the southern extension, has a livelier beach bar scene. Expect lounge music, cocktails, and a younger crowd. Both beaches offer excellent snorkeling around the volcanic rock formations at their northern end.
Wine Tasting on a Volcanic Island
Santorini's winemaking tradition stretches back 3,500 years. The island's volcanic soil and fierce winds produce Assyrtiko grapes with a mineral intensity found nowhere else. Visit Santo Wines or Venetsanos Winery for tastings with caldera views, or seek out smaller estates like Gavalas in Megalochori for a more intimate experience.
The basket-trained vines, wound into ground-hugging "kouloura" nests to protect them from wind, are a unique sight. A tasting flight of four wines typically costs €15-20 and pairs perfectly with the local fava bean dip and tomato fritters.
Pyrgos and Emporio: Fortress Villages
Pyrgos sits at Santorini's highest point, a medieval fortress village with panoramic views in every direction. Its narrow passages were designed to confuse pirate invaders, and today they lead to tiny churches, artisan workshops, and a handful of restaurants that serve traditional Santorinian cuisine.
Emporio's kasteli — a fortified settlement built in concentric circles — is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in the Cyclades. Visit in the late afternoon when the golden light transforms the stone walls, and you'll likely have the place entirely to yourself.
