Going to the south of Puerto Madryn you can visit:

Punta Tombo (190 km. to the south of Puerto Madryn) is a natural reserve of the Magallanes Penguins. Here over the Argentinian sea shores, 250.000 pairs of penguins are reunited since mid-september up to early april. It is an experience on its own right to watch the massive colonies covering the coast. Visitors can walk along with penguins experiencing this natural spectacle from a very close angle.

Puerto Madryn is named after Baron de Madryn, a welshman who, along with 150 more Welsh, founded the city in 1865. Some Welsh traditions are still seen in that area. Gaiman (80 km to the south of Puerto Madryn) with its welsh origin, invites guests and travellers to enjoy a traditional “Welsh Tea” with home-made cakes; there are a lot of “tea houses” offering it.

20 km from Gaiman, tourists should visit the “Museo Paleontológico de Trelew”, which is considered to be one of the most important museums in South America due of its vast fossil and dinosaur collections.

The tours offered by travel agencies from Puerto Madryn are:

Peninsula Valdés Tour. Sightseeing tour ( by bus) + Optional: Whale watching (by boat 1.30 hs) Full day from 8am until 6pm. Tour to Peninsula Valdes and  sightseeing tour by boat with a 1:30 hours duration from Puerto Pirámides for whale watching (June to December).

Dolphin watching tour by boat in Puerto Madryn (during the summer time). Duration: 2 hours. Sightseeing from the cruises ship dock of Puerto Madryn. (It is not guarantee to get to see them.)

Punta Tombo and Puerto Rawson Tour (September to March):  Full day 8am until 6pm. Rawson city – Puerto Rawson (optional: watching toninas) – Punta Tombo.

Punta Tombo and Valle Inferior Tour (September to March):  Full day 8am until 6pm.  Punta Tombo – Gaiman (optional: welsh tea) – Paleontological Museum of Trelew.

Doradillo Beach Tour (2hours):  A visit to different beaches,  2km from the center of the town, where in season there is a whale viewing point on land.

Regina Australe Gulf Cruise:  Cruise A 3 hours cruise through the Golfo Nuevo (New Gulf), setting off from the Puerto Madryn port, bordering the cost until Punta Loma. No Whale Watching activities are Included. There’s an optional Restaurant-Café service.

Submarine Baptism (2hours):  Transfer by boat, scuba diving class and then, an incredible diving experience 8 meters deep for 20’. No experience needed, only good health. Diving equipment will be provided by the instructor.

Punta Loma:  Just 17 km from Puerto Madryn. This wildlife reserve is known for its colony of sea lions.

Kayak with sea lions (4 hours): Kayak tour getting close to the sea lions. No previous experience needed.

Snorkeling with sea lions (4 hours):  after 30 minutes of sailing we reach Punta Loma, a sea lion colony, where you can have an amazing experience snorkeling with them.

Travel Tips in Puerto Madryn

As for excursions you can’t miss, the best ones are two full-days at the Peninsula Valdes and Punta Tombo.

If two or more people are traveling together you should consider renting a car and tour the area by yourselves.

Aerolíneas Argentinas operate to and from Trelew Airport; Almirante Marco Andres Zar Airport, located 60km from Puerto Madryn (45 minutes by car).

Puerto Madryn has an airport “El Tehuelche” situated 10 km from the city where flights arrive from Andes Airlines.

Weather

The weather in Puerto Madryn is windy. Summer days are hot and nights are cool. The winter is cold but no snow. There is not much rain throughout the year.
It is recommended to check the wildlife calendar before planning the trip.

Underwater Baptism: (2 hours) Transfer by boat, scuba class and then the incredible experience of diving for 20 minutes to 8 meters deep, surprising with the wonders of the sea. Experience is not necessary, just good health. Diving equipment is provided by the instructor.

Punta Loma: Just 17 km from Puerto Madryn. This wildlife reserve is known for its colony of sea lions.
